Without question, the St. Louis Rams need playmakers in a big way!! Because Devaney passed on DeSean Jackson in 2008, the Rams need a #1 WR and a punt returner who can take it to the house!! This decision has certainly been one of his biggest drafting gaffes. Denario Alexander has big play potential, but his injury prone history makes him undependable. Mark Clayton did well in 2010 before his injury, but he does not #1 speed. Danny Amendola gets the most out of his abilities, but he also is not a #1. Devaney’s WR selections of Brooks Foster, Keenan Burton, and Mardy Gilyard have been disastrous with Gilyard the only one still on the roster (barely).
Let’s hope the Rams recognize the need for playmakers both at WR and also at backup RB. Many in St. Louis wanted the Rams to draft LeGarrette Blount in the 7th round last year. He had a phenomenal year for the Buccanneers and the Rams had Kenneth Darby!! Enough said!!
Devaney could be the most popular NFL GM ever who has a winning record of less than 25% (10-38). Most of his picks in Rounds 4-7 have been cut or not had any impact. Finding “diamonds in the rough” is a critical component to the job of GM – let’s hope Devaney finds more success in this area.
